1-What are you expect now that you're in Iced Earth?
Well, I'm glad to be a part of Iced Earth because the band has always been true to the genre of heavy metal. The band has never sold out or changed direction and I think that is important for a band that has been around for as long as Iced Earth. I expect we will continue recording CDs and touring.
2-In This period while Schaffer is on treatment, what do you plan to do?
I just finished recording my drum tracks for the new Demons & Wizards CD. The songs sound great! It's a bit difficult to say what I will be doing between Jan. - April '05 because there are a few things shaping up that aren't confirmed yet.
My DVD "Performance & Technique" will be released sometime in early '05. I put out the VHS version of "P&T" over a year ago. The DVD includes 4 bonus segments which I added to the original 50 minute program. A major distributor will be releasing the DVD which I'm really excited about. The only thing I'm waiting on now is an official release date. I'll be busy doing promotion/clinics when the DVD hits the stores.
3-Do you have any idea of who might be the new bassist and guitar player? How is the process of selecting people?
I'm not sure. I know that Jon and Tim have a few guys in mind.
4-How was playing in Halford?
The Halford experience was great! Rob was the greatest guy to work for. We recorded 2 studio CDs, 1 double live CD and toured some parts of the world that I had never seen before.
5-How do you felt playing for 250.000 people in Rock In Rio with halford?
I think Rock In Rio was the perfect way to end the Resurrection tour. It was our last show on that tour. The only drag was that after the show the band left without me and I had to walk over a mile back to the dressing rooms. Ha!
2 vans were provided to take us band members back to the dressing rooms which were located (believe it or not) behind the crowd of 250,000. As the Halford band divided and piled into the 2 vans, each van driver assumed that I was in the other van. So I had to carry my sweaty vest and stick bag walking bare-footed through the dirt, broken glass, etc . back to the dressing room.
6-Are you participating in something related to the new album of Iced Earth?
Jon's talked about some ideas that he has for the next Iced Earth CD. A concept. That's about it. Now that the Demons & Wizards stuff is being wrapped up I'm sure we'll focus on IE material.
7-How did you get to Iced Earth?
Richard Christy recommended me for the gig. He wanted to audition for the Howard Stern Show doing his comedy and the auditions were scheduled during the middle of the Iced Earth tour so he asked me if I was interested and available to finish the tour. I said, "Hell Yeah!"
8-How was the work of learning the songs for the tour?
I didn't have a lot of time to learn all the songs but it worked out that they had a week break in the touring schedule. I had already learned about half of the tunes before the break so I would get to the rehearsal studio early and work on the songs that I didn't know yet and then they would show up and we would go over everything that I had learned up to that point. After they would leave I would stay there by myself practicing where I left off with the unlearned songs.
9-How is to work with Schaffer and Halford?
They're very different personalities. Rob is a lot more laid back. He sits back, listens, makes suggestions, but pretty much leaves everything up to me when it comes to 'what to play' and 'what not to play'. If you think about Rob's career and the various time-keepers you'll discover that all the guys were very different drummers. Holland (groove and simplicity), Binks (slightly funky, long fills), Travis (power double bass). Rob basically trusts the drummer to add his own personality to the songs.
Jon is very intense. Musically, the Iced Earth sound is built around his rhythmic guitar picking. As a drummer, I need to understand (and be able to play) all those quick intricate patterns that he's playing because there are times when he asks me to play those rhythms in unison with him. What's funny is - Jon doesn't read music. All those crazy picking things that he does comes from his own rhythmic vocabulary in his head. It's pretty amazing!
10-Tell us about your career, the beginning, influences favorite drummers etc.
I started playing drums when I was 10 years old. My first band was with my brothers, Ron and Ralph. We played some originals and a bunch of covers including Judas Priest, Rush, UFO, etc.. My first major recording was with Juggernaut. We recorded 2 albums for Metal Blade and toured the Texas area. I then joined Riot and recorded 7, 8, 9....I don't know, quite a few CDs with those guys and toured all over. That's where I really got my playing together. Riot was cool because even though at times I over-played a bit, it all seemed to fit within the music that we created. My Riot resume basically led to the Halford gig.
During my early years I was influenced by Neil Peart, Simon Phillips, Terry Bozzio, and then Deen Castronovo came around and I was blown away by his playing with Wild Dogs, Cacophony, and Tony MacAlpine. Now I listen to a lot of drummers for ideas, including Danny Carey, Virgil Donati, Mike Mangini, and Marco Minnemann.
11-Are any plans for shows in South America, especially Brazil?
No shows planned at the moment for Iced Earth or any other band that I'm currently working with.
12-The Halford band was dissolved because of the come back of Priest, are any hope for Halford be reactivated?
Well, it has been announced that we'll start writing and recording some material in late 2005. We got together a few months ago and talked about it but to tell you the truth I don't know much beyond that. It would be cool to work with Rob, Metal Mike, Davis, and Z again. The only thing is that everyone needs to realize that Halford is not a priority for any of us now. Rob has quite a bit of work with Priest, Metal Mike has Pain Museum and Testament, and Z has his own band, Tribe of Gypsies, and is always busy producing.
13-You will be the drummer for the 2nd Demons & Wizards album? Tell us something about this record, how is the recording, compositions etc.
I spoke with Jon last week and the guitars and bass tracks are done and Hansi has finished the vocals also.
This record will be done quick. There is a lot of variety. Some crazy fast stuff, a few mid-tempo tunes that have strong melody lines and great hooks, and a couple of ballads that are very deep in subject matter. It's definitely a record that listeners will want to spend a lot of time with because most of the songs are multi-dimensional in dynamics and tempos which I think gives the CD a lot of character.
14-What's your favorite album that you recorded in your career?
That's a tough one. I can't pick one overall but I'll mention a few and why I like them.
RIOT - "The Privilege Of Power":
We were trying to make our mark on this one as a band and as musicians. I played some crazy stuff on those tunes. There were no boundaries. We caped it off with a remake of Al Dimeola's "Race With Devil On Spanish Highway". That should tell you all you need to know about this CD.
RIOT - "Nightbreaker" and "Sons Of Society":
Both of these CDs are similar to me in the fact that Mark (Reale) and the rest of the band was concentrating on writing better songs. The playing all around sounds very mature but not conservative.
HALFORD - "Live Insurrection":
I think every musician grows up dreaming of playing the songs of their heroes with their heroes. Playing the Priest and Fight songs live on tour with Rob and the Halford band was an incredible experience and this double live CD documents those shows. I've played with tons of cover bands over the years and I've learned a lot by analyzing the feel, grooves, and licks of other drummers. For me it's not just about the beat patterns and fills but about paying attention to small details like: How tight/loose is the hi-hat? Is the snare drum pushing or laying behind the beat?, etc.. When I listen to Live Insurrection I take pride in the fact that the Dave Holland songs sound like Holland's playing, Les Binks songs sound like Binks, Scott Travis songs sound like Travis, etc..
SPASTIC INK - "Ink Complete" and "Ink Compatible":
These are the only CDs that I'm on with my brother Ron. It was a unbelievable task putting the first CD, "Ink Complete", together. We worked on that one for a year. It was pretty much a 50/50 collaboration writing and exchanging ideas. I would come up with a drum part and Ron would write around that or Ron would write something and record it with a click and give it to me and I would create my thing to that. On "Ink Compatible" I played on 6 of the 9 songs. I wish I played on the whole thing but I was on the road with Halford so Ron found a couple of other drummers to finish the CD. It took me 4 months to learn and record those 6 songs. I'll probably never record anything that difficult again.
PAIN MUSEUM - "Metal For Life":
This is the heaviest drumming that I've ever recorded. I was a real challenge for me. I was listening to a lot of Arch Enemy and Death while learning the songs for this one.
15-What kind of band's you been listening lately?
I've been listening to both Mnemic CDs, Lamb Of God's latest, the Death catalog, and Strapping Young Lad.
16-Are there any possibilities of new albums with Riot or Spastic Ink with you in?
Probably not with Riot. Those guys have been working with various drummers during the last few years and I wouldn't want to do it unless their was some serious plans to tour or build something from it.
Spastic Ink? - Yeah maybe. The problem is that on "Ink Compatible", Ron had to do everything and I don't think he wants to go through that again. I don't blame him. Maybe if it could be a priority then things would be different but with the state of the music industry it's very difficult to spend that much time on something with no huge monetary return - no matter how much you love it.
17-Could you say a few words to your Brazilian fans and Brazil Under Ice site?
Scream for me Brazil!!! No, I'm just kidding. I can't wait to play there again. I had a great time visiting and hanging out with the fans. The most true Metal fans are in Brazil and all of South America.
Brazil Under Ice continues to spread the metal to the fans. We need more great heavy metal sites like yours!

1- Quais são suas expectativas agora que você está no Iced Earth?
Bem, estou feliz de estar no Iced Earth, pois a banda sempre foi algo verdadeiro dentro do Heavy. A banda nunca se vendeu ou mudou a direção musical e acho que isso é importante para uma banda que está a tanto tempo quanto o Iced Earth. Eu espero que continuemos a gravar cds e fazer turnês.
2- Nesse período de tratamento de Jon Schaffer o que você planeja fazer?
Eu acabei de gravar minhas partes de bateria no novo cd do Demons & Wizards. As músicas estão ótimas! É um pouco difícil de dizer o que farei entre Janeiro e 5 de Abril, pois tem algumas coisas que estão se formando que ainda não estão confirmadas.
3- Você tem alguma idéia de quem possa ser o novo baixista e guitarrista do Iced Earth? Como é o processo de escolha?
Não tenho certeza. Eu sei que Jon e Tim tem alguns caras em mente.
4- Como foi tocar com Halford?
Foi ótimo! Rob foi o melhor cara para se trabalhar. Gravamos 2 álbuns de estúdio, um ao vivo e conheci países que nunca tinha ido.
5- Como você se sentiu tocando para 250.000 pessoas no Rock In Rio com a banda Halford?
Eu acho que o Rock In Rio foi o final perfeito para uma turnê. O único porém foi que no final a banda saiu sem mim e tive que andar muito para chegar ao camarim. Duas vans iriam nos levar para os camarins que eram localizados (acreditem se quiser) atrás da platéia. Como a banda se dividiu nas duas vans, cada motorista pensou que eu estava na outra. Então tive que carregar minhas roupas através da sujeira, vidro quebrado, e etc até o camarim.
6- Você está participando em algo relacionado a novos lançamentos do Iced Earth?
Jon me falou de algumas idéias para o próximo álbum. Um conceito e apenas isso. Agora que o Demons & Wizards já foi concluído ele irá se focar no material do Iced Earth.
7- Como você entrou no Iced Earth?
Richard Christy me recomendou para os shows. Ele queria fazer a audição para o Howard Stern Show as quais estavam agendadas no meio da turnê da banda, e me pediu se poderia substituí-lo. Eu disse “mas é claro”.
8- Como foi o processo de aprendizagem das músicas para turnê?
Eu não tive tempo de aprender todas as músicas, mas deu certo, pois tínhamos uma semana de folga. Eu aprendi metade antes da folga então eu ia mais cedo no estúdio e trabalhava no que não sabia, e daí eles apareciam e tocávamos tudo que tinha aprendido até aquele ponto. Quando eles iam embora eu ainda ficava praticando o que ainda não havia aprendido.
9- Como é trabalhar com Schaffer e Halford?
São pessoas bem diferentes. Rob é mais sossegado. Ele senta, escuta, dá sugestões, mas sempre deixa para mim o que quero e não quero tocar. Se você observar na carreira de Halford, você verá que os bateristas sempre foram bem diferentes. Holland (groove e simplicidade), Binks (um pouco Funky, grande passagens), Travis (um pedal duplo poderoso). Rob basicamente confia no baterista adicionar personalidade a suas músicas.
Jon é muito intenso, musicalmente o Iced Earth é construído pela sua guitarria rítmica e palhateda. Como um baterista, tenho que entender (e ser hábito a tocar) essas partes rápidas pois a horas que ele pede para eu tocar em unisom com ele. O mais engraçado é que Jon não lê música. Tocas aquelas palhetadas loucas vem de sua cabeça. É extraordinário!
10- Conte-nos sobre sua carreira.
Comecei a tocar com 10 anos de idade. Minha primeira banda foi com meus irmãos Ron e Ralph. Tocamos músicas próprias e cover de Judas Priest, Rush, UFO, etc. Minha primeira gravação foi com o Juggernaut. Gravamos 2 álbuns com a Metal Blade e excursionamos na área do Texas. Depois entrei no Riot e gravei vários cds com ele e excursionamos muito. Foi ali que ganhei muita experiência. Minha participação no Riot basicamente meu levou ao Halford.

12- A Banda Halford foi dissolvida por causa da volta do Judas Priest, a algum chance da volta da banda?
Bem, foi anunciado que começaremos a escrever e gravar algum material em 2005. Nos encontramos alguns meses atrás e conversamos sobre isso, mas falando a verdade não sei muito além disso. Seria legal trabalhar com Rob, Mike, Davis e Roy Z de novo. Mas a única coisa é que o Halford não é prioridade para nenhum de nós agora. Rob está com o Judas Priest, Mike com o Painmuseum e Testament, Roy Z sua banda Tribe Of Gypsies e está sempre ocupado produzindo.
13- Você será o baterista para o novo cd do Demons & Wizards? Nos diga algo sobre a gravação , com está indo etc.
Eu falei com Jon semana passada e as guitarras e baixo já foram feitas e Hansi já fez os vocais.
Essa gravação será bem rápida.Há muita variedade. Coisas loucas, melodias fortes e ótimas bases, e algumas baladas bem profundas. Definitivamente é um álbum aonde os ouvintes vão passar muito tempo prestando atenção devido sua dimensão, que faz o cd ter muita personalidade.
14- Qual seu álbum favorito, dentre os que você gravou?
Essa é boa. Eu não posso escolher um dentre todos, mas mencionarei alguns e porque gosto deles.
RIOT - "The Privilege Of Power":
Estávamos tentando nesse cd, deixar nossa marca como banda e músicos. Eu toquei muito coisa louca nesse CD.
RIOT - "Nightbreaker" and "Sons Of Society":
Ambos cds são similares para mim no fato que Mark (Reale) e o resto da banda estava concentrado em escrever coisas melhores para o álbum. O cd soa muito maduro mas não conservativo.
HALFORD - "Live Insurrection":
Acho que todos os músicos crescem sonhando em tocar as músicas de seus heróis com seus heróis.Tocar as músicas do Judas Priest e Fight ao vivo com Rob e a banda Halford foi uma experiência incrível, gravar esse cd duplo foi demais. Eu toquei com várias bandas covers durante os anos e aprendi muito de feeling, grooves de outros bateristas. Não é apenas saber que nota vai aonde, mas prestar atenção nos pequenos detalhes. Quanto aberto está o chimbal? A caixa está soando bem?, etc... Quando escuto o Live Insurrection eu fico com orgulho em ver que as músicas de Dave Holland soam como ele tocando e etc.
SPASTIC INK - "Ink Complete" e "Ink Compatible":
Esses são os únicos cds que toco com meu irmão Ron. Foi uma tarefa difícil lançar esses cds. Trabalhamos nele por um ano. Foi praticamente meio a meio em colaborações nas letras. Eu vinha com a parte de bateria e Ron criava algo dali ou escrevia algo, gravava e me passava para eu criar algo em cima. Nesse cd toquei 6 das 9 músicas. Eu queria ter tocado todas mas estava em turnê com Halford então Ron chamou outros bateristas para gravar as restantes. Levou 4 meses para aprender e gravar essas 6 músicas. Provavelmente nunca mais gravarei algo tão difícil assim.
PAIN MUSEUM - "Metal For Life":
Essa é a gravação mais pesada que já fiz. Foi um grande desafio para mim. Estava escutando muito Death e Arch Enemy enquanto aprendia essa músicas.
15- Que bandas você tem escutado ultimamente?
Tenho escutado ambos cds do Mnemic, o último do Lamb Of God, todos do Death, e Strapping Young Lad.
16- A alguma possibilidade de novos álbuns com o Riot ou Spastic Ink com você?
Provavelmente não com o Riot. Eles tem trabalhado com vários bateristas por vários anos, e não retornaria se não houvesse planos sérios de turnê ou novo material.
Spastic Ink? – Talvez, o problema na banda é que Ron tinha que fazer tudo e não quero que ele passe por isso de novo. Eu não o culpo. Mas no estado que a indústria da música está, é diíicil gastar tanto tempo em algo não viável monetariamente, não importa o quanto você ame!
17- Você poderia mandar alguma mensagem para seus fãs brsiileiros e especialmente os usuários do site Brazil Under Ice?
Grite para mim Brasil!! Estou brincando! Eu mal posso esperar para tocar aí de novo. Eu tive ótimos momentos visitando e conhecendo os fãs. Os fãs mais verdadeiros e dedicados estão no Brasil e América do Sul.
Brazil Under Ice continue espalhando o metal para os fãs. Precisamos de mais sites de Heavy Metal como esse!

Quinta-feira, 20 // Novidades sobre Bobby Jarzombek
Bobby Jarzombek atualizou seu site oficial (www.bobbyjarzombek.com) com algumas novidades referentes as gravações do novo álbum do Demons & Wizards, dizendo que a parte de bateria já foi toda finalizada nos estúdios Morrisound com o produtor/engenheiro de som Jim Morris. Bobby disse também que Jon Schaffer junto com Hansi Kursch conseguiram criar novas faixas matadoras para esse novo álbum.
Outra novidade é que Bobby gravou também as partes de bateria para o álbum da banda de Rob Rock chamada AFM, cujo título desse novo álbum é "Holy Hell", que provavelmente será lançado por meados de abril. Roy Z (produtor da banda Halford) ajudou a compor, tocar guitarra e produzir nesse álbum.
O video "Performance & Technique", lançado mais ou menos a 1 anos atrás, de Bobby, sobre técnicas de bateria foi lançado também em DVD recentemente, contendo mais alguns bonus como atrativo extra.
O melhor de tudo foi que Bobby citou também a nossa ENTREVISTA EXCLUSIVA feita recentemente com ele.

Quinta-feira, 20 // Site oficial de Tim Owens
Recentemente foi colocado no ar o site oficial de Tim "Ripper" Owens no endereço www.timripperowens.com. O site ainda está em fase de finalização mas algumas novidades já foram postadas.
Tim finalizou as gravações de sua primeira demo solo e ainda está a procura de uma gravadora. Ele já possui mais outras músicas que não estão presentes nessa demo e garante que estão matadoras.
Nas guitarras a banda de Tim conta com John Comprix (13 Faces, Spawn), enquanto que na bateria Tim espera contar com seu companheiro de Iced Earth, Bobby Jarzombek ou Jeff Plate (Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Savatage). Mais alguns convidados estão sendo estudados em participar desse álbum, como Scott Ian (Anthrax, S.O.D).
Esse novo projeto de Tim, com influências de Judas Priest, Black Sabbath e Pantera, ainda não tem nome mas por enquanto está sendo chamado de RIP e Tim diz que sugestões para nomes são bem vindas.

Segunda-feira, 24 // Mais um tributo com participação de Tim Owens
O produtor Bob Kulick, anunciou recentemente o lançamento de mais um tributo chamado "Michael Schenker and Heavy Hitters", ao guitarrista Michael Schenker (Ufo, Scorpions, MSG), onde o mesmo participa tocando guitarra em todas músicas, junto com outras estrelas do Rock e Heavy Metal em geral.
Tim "Ripper" Owens participa cantando a música "War Pigs".

O site oficial da banda colocou para download um trailer em vídeo (mpeg - 4.3MB) do primeiro DVD do grupo, chamado “Gettysburg”. O vídeo contará a história da batalha de Gettysburg, levada a cabo em solo norte-americano.
“O novo ano começa com o Iced Earth entregando-lhes o aguardado DVD de "Gettysburg". O lançamento contará a batalha épica de Gettysburg (1863), apresentada no álbum "The Glorious Burden", em 2004, e contará com tecnologia estéreo e um poderoso sistema surround 5.1. De fato, haverá duas diferentes versões surround (uma "meta"’ e outra mais "teatra"’). O DVD contará ainda com comentários no campo de Gettysburg, e uma longa entrevista com Jon Schaffer. Mais detalhes em breve."

With regards to the next Demons and Wizards album I am happy to tell you that 5 songs have been mixed for it already and that there are 7 more to go. How many of them we are going to use for the regular album and how many we will use as bonus material I can ´t tell you right now. There are 11 Schaffer/Kürsch songs and one cover tune. We will be done with everything mid February. The album surely will be released in late spring, or early summer. I am very pleased with the songs and so is Jon. My favourite tune at the moment is called "Touched by the Crimson King". We have not spoken about an album title yet but have to make a decision rather soon. I will let you know.

Quantas delas usaremos para o álbum e quantas usaremos como faixas-bônus, não sei lhes dizer no momento. Há onze faixas de Schaffer/Kürsch e um cover. O álbum será lançado entre a primavera/início do verão. Eu e Jon estamos muito satisfeitos com as músicas. Minha favorita no momento chama-se 'Touched By The Crimson King'.
